Review: Breaking the Silence by Diamante Lavendar

The book follows Joan’s story – a woman who’d gone through sexual abuse in her childhood, and as a result, had a traumatic life afterward. However, once she finds herself pregnant, she decides it’s time to overcome everything that had happened, and write it all down in a diary as part of the healing process. She learns about self acceptance and untangles the consequences of the psychological abuse she had gone through. The worst part is, it’s her family who inflicted this on her, so her story is more than a little bit disturbing. But the way it’s written, with life lessons in every chapter, and so realistic; there’s no doubt this book will be truly inspirational for those who had similar problems in life. And not just for them – it’s a good example of overcoming any kind of abuse for any reader interested in mental healing. A big part of Joan’s problem is self-hatred and the years that followed the tragedy. It’s not just about forgetting what had happened, but about dealing with all the bad choices afterward while keeping this huge secret inside. People see her as difficult, and how can someone know what’s really inside any of us? So, this book isn’t just about those who deal with sexual abuse and its consequences. It’s also for those around them, for everyone who’s ever dealt with people that seemed difficult and unreasonable. It’s a reminder to stop and think about how every of us is fighting a battle, and how important it is to be kind and attentive.

I’d like to thank the author for giving me a copy of Breaking the Silence in exchange for an honest review.
